The formerly top-ranked bowler, who finished with a match haul of 10 for 67 during which he touched the milestone of 500 Test wickets, has reached his best position since August 2016 when he was third. The 34-year-old has also gained seven places with the bat after his quick-fire 62 off 45 balls in the first innings, the joint-third fastest for England in Test history, and risen three places among all-rounders to 11th. Indian cricketers, who have not taken the field since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, retained their positions in the top-10 of batsmen rankings. Skipper Virat Kohli remains second in the batsmen standings behind Steve Smith while Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane remain seventh and ninth respectively. In the list of all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin continue to occupy the third and fifth spot respectively. However, with Broad moving seven places to break in to the top 10, India's Jasprit Bumrah was pushed down a spot to be placed eighth in the bowlers list. Another England bowler to advance in the rankings was Chris Woakes, whose five-wicket haul in the second innings lifted him to 20th position and a career-best rating points tally of 654. England opener Rory Burns gained 13 spots to reach 17th position after scores of 57 and 90 at Old Trafford, the first time the 29-year-old left-hander has moved into the top 20. Ollie Pope reached a career-best 46th position, gaining 24 slots on the back of his 91 in his only innings of the match, while wicketkeeper Jos Buttler's knock of 67 lifted him from 50th to 44th. For the West Indies, Shai Hope has gained two slots to reach 68th position while pacer Kemar Roach has moved a place to reach 15th place after grabbing four wickets in England's first innings. WWF India has been working to further tiger conservation in the country for almost five decades now through securing tiger habitats in India, increasing the involvement of local communities as stewards of conservation and through the "Bagh Mitras" programme and supporting research initiatives to protect these big cats from existing and potential threats.
The Bagh Mitras are a group of trained community members who act as first respondents during a negative human-tiger encounter and provide crucial support to the Forest Department, district administration and WWF India. They play a significant role in keeping the animal away from people and preventing injuries and fatalities among the large crowd of onlookers that typically gather in such situations. Tigers dispersing outside the forests is a common phenomenon for any tiger landscape, with areas like Pilibhit witnessing continuous and increasing instances of negative encounters. The Bagh Mitras are from select villages around the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve where such incidents are known to often occur. Being from the local community, they are able to manage the situation on the ground and not allow it to deteriorate and go out of hand. Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Capitals CEO, Mr Dhiraj Malhotra said, "Tigers being integral to our team identity and DNA, Delhi Capitals is happy to stand for the cause of tiger conservation in collaboration with WWF India. This cause needs constant momentum and sharing of knowledge and we hope our collective efforts will bring about more awareness and participation towards the cause of securing our tigers." Mr Ravi Singh, Secretary-General and CEO, WWF India added, "Tigers embody power, agility and grace, traits valued by sportspersons across the world. It gives us great pleasure to see this iconic big cat now represented on the field by Delhi Capitals. We are confident that this partnership with Delhi Capitals will take the message of tiger conservation to a larger audience, inspiring them to further the cause of protecting our national animal and its habitats." Delhi Capitals looks forward to motivating their community of fans to support the Bagh Mitras, WWF India and their conversation initiatives by enabling awareness and participation. This campaign was initiated today, with a special video capturing the collective spirit of the Tiger represented by the Delhi Capitals players. Delhi Capitals looks forward to effectively use their voice to further spread awareness and conversations to champion the cause of tiger conservation. Source: Media Release Get breaking news alerts. The 34-year-old Broad reached the milestone when he dismissed West Indies' Kraigg Brathwaite on the fifth day of the deciding third Test in Manchester. Yuvraj took to Twitter to ask his fans to applaud the Englishman's hard work and achievement. "I'm sure every time I write something about @StuartBroad8, people relate to him getting hit for 6 sixes! Today I request all my fans to applaud what he has achieved! 500 test wickets is no joke - it takes hard work, dedication & determination. Broady you're a legend! Hats off," Yuvraj tweeted.
Broad was only in his second year in international cricket when Yuvraj famously took him apart in a World T20 match in Durban in September 2007. Broad was dispatched for six sixes in the 19th over of India's innings as Yuvraj raced to his fifty off just 12 balls, which still remains as the fastest half-century in the T20 format. Since that forgettable night at the Kingsmead, Broad has gone on to play 140 Tests, 121 ODIs and 56 T20Is for England, bagging 744 international wickets across formats. The two share a cordial relationship. When Yuvraj called time on his international career, Broad posted a picture of the two with the caption, "Enjoy retirement Legend @yuvisofficial." With 589 wickets, Broad's longtime pace colleague James Anderson leads the fast bowlers' pack followed by Glenn McGrath (563), Courtney Walsh (519) and Broad (501). Spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan heads the overall tally with 800 Test wickets, ahead of Shane Warne (708) and Anil Kumble (619). (With PTI inputs) Get breaking news alerts. In the 2018-19, he guided new entrants Uttarakhand to the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals. Bhatia, who was considered Delhi cricket's crisis man, played 112 first-class games, scoring 6482 runs at an average of 49.10 apart from taking 137 wickets at 27.97. He also played 119 List A games and 146 T20s. Last season, the Delhi-born cricketer played List A cricket in Bangladesh. "I had decided last year only (about retirement). I was not playing domestic cricket here and then got to do commentary. Then I was playing as a professional in Bangladesh but this year they stopped hiring professionals and then coronavirus happened. Therefore, I though it was time to retire," Bhatia told PTI. "Having said that, I feel fitter than ever and very much open to playing in overseas leagues." He came closest to playing for India in 2014 when he was picked among the probables for the T20 World Cup. However, he has no regrets about not getting that coveted India cap. "I don't want to think about my career that way. It would be immature of me. There is so much I was able to do and I am grateful about that. There are no regrets. "The highs would surely be winning the Ranji Trophy for Delhi (2007-08), the IPL in 2012 (with KKR) and personally getting Sachin Tendulkar out thrice in the IPL, which I was able to play for 10 years. That is something I would always remember."
Bhatia has done a course in bio-mechanics from an institute in Hawaii and wants to explore a career in that field. "I have cleared stage 2, now I will be doing bio-mechanics 3. We have many bio-mechanics specialists in bowling but not in training. I can catch the movements of players and help them." Asked about the difference in domestic cricket standards now from the time he started playing, Bhatia said, "The structure has improved to make the game more competitive. But surprisingly, when it comes to injury management, we are still behind." "When you are starting your career in India, you tend to get injured a lot, there is lack of knowledge on that front. It is not cricket-related, it is just about understanding your body and its movements. "Thanks to this course that I have done, I know my body much better and feel have not moved as well as I have been moving over the last three years. I want to help the youngsters on that front." In its first edition, the Super League will help decide which teams feature in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. How many teams are involved? Thirteen teams are taking part in this competition. These are the 12 Full Member nations, along with the Netherlands. The Netherlands earned their place as the 13th team by winning the ICC World Cricket League Championship back in 2017. It was a massive moment for Dutch sport, and you can see in this video what it meant for them! What does the new tournament mean for the World Cup? The CWC Super League is an important tournament for teams on the #RoadTo2023. It all depends on where the teams finish on the Super League points table. India, who are the hosts in 2023, and the other top seven teams will qualify automatically for the World Cup. The bottom five teams will play a qualifying tournament, which will also feature the best teams from the lower rungs of competition. If you think of it like steps, with the World Cup right on top, Super League is the level right below that, followed by CWC League 2 and CWC Challenge League. Since each point matters, there will be no dead rubbers and teams will always have to be at their very best. How does it work? Each team in the Super League plays three ODIs against eight other teams. Four of these are home series and four are away series. This means each team plays a total of 24 ODIs that will earn them points on the #RoadTo2023. An added benefit is that teams just outside of the top 10 in the current rankings have more chances to play more ODIs against the top teams, helping them improve their levels as well. But not everyone plays everyone? That's right. The Super League works within the parameters of the existing Future Tours Programme (FTP) between Members. In this aspect, this league too is like the World Test Championship. How does the points system work? Each team gets 10 points for a win, five for a tie/ no result/ abandoned match and zero for a loss. Are there other tweaks to the playing conditions? The ICC have announced that all front-foot no-balls will be called by the third umpire. Teams will also have points deducted for slow over-rates. Do all ODIs now come under the Super League? No. Teams will also play bilateral ODIs between each other outside of the Super League. In some cases, they may play say four or five matches in a series, but only three pre-decided matches will count for Super League points. And all ODIs will continue to count towards ICC ODI Team Rankings. Get breaking news alerts. The batsman expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling and vowed to appeal again. "There have been many cricketers before me who have committed corruption but none of them were given a punishment as severe as mine. I will appeal once more to get my sentence reduced," Akmal was quoted as saying by the local media here after the fresh decision. Akmal was handed a three-year ban in April for failing to report approaches ahead of the Pakistan Super League. He had accepted his mistake but tried to justify his position. Umar Akmal: The ultimate fallen angel of Pakistan cricket He last played a Test for Pakistan in late 2009 but his most recent international appearance was in last October in the T20 home series against Sri Lanka. The PCB had charged him with two breaches of Article 2.4.4 of its Anti-Corruption Code in two unrelated incidents on March 17. The breaches pertain to failure to report approaches from corruptors. Akmal was provisionally suspended hours before his Pakistan Super League team Quetta Gladiators was to take on Islamabad in the opening match of the 2020 PSL. He is the younger brother of former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who played 53 Tests, 58 T20s, and 157 ODIs for Pakistan, and cousin of current captain Babar Azam. He has featured in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20s, scoring 1003, 3194 and 1690 runs respectively. Akmal promised a lot after making a hundred in New Zealand on his Test debut, but failed to live up to the high expectations that came with some fine performances early in his career. Constant run-ins with the authorities also marred his stop-start career. Akmal had earlier escaped a PCB ban in February for allegedly making crude remarks to a trainer during a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. Get breaking news alerts. Stewart said Woakes, who has been a consistent performer, claiming 106 wickets from 35 Tests, is often deprived of the recognition he deserves. "He's almost the unsung hero of the England set-up because we talk about Broad and Anderson then the pace of Archer and Wood, where as Woakes just goes quietly about his business," Stewart said on 'Sky Sports'. "I'm pleased he finished with a five-for because a lot of the time his performances go under the radar compared to these perceived bigger players," he added. Stewart said the the 31-year-old all-rounder has been outstanding in England, and the fact that he was picked in the playing XI for the series decider against West Indies speaks for itself. "I'm a massive fan of Woakes, especially in England. His record in England is outstanding. It's a real feather in his cap that he got the nod when Chris Silverwood said 'we are picking our very best bowling attack for this Test match we have to win," he said. The former wicketkeeper, who featured in 133 Tests and 170 ODIs between 1989 to 2003 for England, reckons it will be a difficult feat for young Sam Curran to chase Woakes' spot in the Test side. "Sam Curran played one Test match and got three wickets, he wants to chase down Chris Woakes' slot but, at the moment, while Woakes is in this form it is going to be very tough for Sam Curran to get in," he said. India are scheduled to tour Australia in November for a gruelling four-Test series and Gambhir feels the bowling attack can rattle the Aussie batting line up despite the return of Smith and Warner. "Because India has got the bowling attack to rattle the Australian batting line-up even with David Warner and Steve Smith, but yeah, it's going to be a different challenge than what it was last time around," Gambhir said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'. "So, you would want Virat Kohli to fire plus the bowlers as well because it's the bowlers that will win you the Test matches," added the southpaw. Indian bowling attack especially the pace battery, which includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has enjoyed a good run recently. Gambhir, however, said this time it will be a different challenge for India, who registered their first ever Test series in Australia the last time they were Down Under. "Whether it was his (Kohli's) first tour, whether it was second tour, this time around, obviously, he (Kohli) would be gearing up for it because it's going to be a different challenge with David Warner and Steve Smith coming back into the Australian Test line-up," he said. StrengthDavid Warner is in prime form and the responsibility has always fired him on to do bigger things. The dual role of captain and the premier batsman of Sunrisers is sure to give him more oxygen this time. Then they have some really wonderful players like Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Manish Pandey, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jonny Bairstow, all match-winners on their own. Perhaps, no other team has got so long a list of impact players. They have useful all-rounders too in Vijay Shankar and Mitchell Marsh, lending balance to the side. 2. WeaknessLike Mumbai Indians, the Sunrisers too do not have any obvious chinks in their armour. But many times, the Hyderabad outfit has failed to work as a team and tried to bank on individual brilliance to achieve result. Hopefully, Warner and his mode of captaincy can change the trend for them this year in UAE. Bhuvneshwar has been their key bowler over the years, making important contributions at the start of the innings as well as at the death. But over the last year or so, the pacer has lost lot of time to injury and rehabilitation and the coronavirus-forced break. It remains to be seen whether Bhuvneshwar can lift the performance to the mark this time around. It will have a crucial bearing on their fortunes. 3. SquadDavid Warner, Abhishek Sharma, Basil Thampi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Billy Stanlake, Jonny Bairstow, Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Sandeep Sharma, Shahbaz Nadeem, Sreevats Goswami, Siddharth Kaul, Khaleel Ahmed, T Natarajan, Vijay Shankar, Wriddhiman Saha, Virat Singh, Priyam Garg, Mitchell Marsh, Sandeep Bavanaka, Fabien Allem, Abdul Samad, Sanjay Yadav. 4. Stars to watchDavid Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Manish Pandey 5. IPL PredictionSunrisers should enter the Qualifiers and if not it will be a big disappointment. But imagining them as IPL champions is by no means an exaggeration of thought. StrengthThe binding factor is the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. Without imposing himself on the team, Rohit has turned Mumbai an ambitious team that settles for nothing else other than victory. Of course, he is a batsman supreme too who can wither attacks in his inimitable style. Apart from his presence, Mumbai Indians' benefit from an array of players who thrive in T20 environment like Quinton de Kock, Kieron Pollard, Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Surya Kumar Yadav etc. Then they have two master bowlers in Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga and don't write off the Sri Lankan veteran purely because of his age. It was his last over that delivered Mumbai the fourth title last year. To add to an already impressive list, the Mumbai have also added the likes of Trent Boult and Chris Lynn to their line-up from the auction last year. 2. WeaknessOn the paper, Mumbai Indians have little weakness. They are a well-rounded unit served by some excellent players. While they have a brilliant pace unit, the same cannot be said about their spin department. Their spin attack revolves around young leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya. But other than the duo, they really don't have a back-up and an off-day for them can hurt Mumbai. The pitches in UAE are traditionally slow and the Mumbai Indians just may feel the pinch of the absence of an experienced tweaker. Jayant Yadav too is there but the off-spinner has not really hit home in the shortest format. 3. SquadRohit Sharma, Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Dhawal Kulkarni, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell McClenaghan, Quinton de Kock, Rahul Chahar, Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Trent Boult, Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Saurabh Tiwary, Mohsin Khan, Digvijay Deshmukh, Prince Balwant Rai Singh. 4. Stars to watchRohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan. 5. IPL predictionThey should make it to the play-offs without much hustle. The challenge for them will be to tame the pressure on them as defending champions and if they can do that Mumbai can really make an impact this time too.
