India have blown hot and cold in the T20 format over the last 12 months, failing to win two successive series and managing only three series victories out of the seven they have played since November 2018. That they haven't fielded their best eleven as yet in this format was not lost on Virat Kohli when asked about India's fifth-placed ranking. However, ahead of the three-match T20I series against West Indies which starts on Friday (December 6), India look close as close to full strength as is possible.
Kohli has returned to the T20I side after taking a break during the games against Bangladesh. India are also boosted in their pace department by the presence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami. Barring the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, who is out due to a knee injury, India boast the luxury of a near full-strength team, with several all-round and spin options to boot.
While there is still that conundrum of wrist spin vs finger spinners who can also bat, the presence of both Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal has indicated that India haven't yet ditched the former option, with Kohli stressing on their importance during the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, while also reflecting on the key roles the likes of Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja can play. This sets the tone for the T20I opener, with India going in with a stronger bowling attack as compared to the one they had when they white-washed West Indies in the T20I series in August this year.
The West Indies, meanwhile, enter this series having lost to Afghanistan in the 20-over format . They are missing key players like Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Chris Gayle. Newly-appointed skipper Kieron Pollard, however, has insisted that there is no point talking about players who aren't present with the team at the moment and that he would rather back the mix of youth and experience that West Indies have picked for this series.
While Jason Holder, Lendl Simmons and Denesh Ramdin are the experienced ones in the team alongside Pollard, there are also those with a fair bit of T20 experience - both IPL and CPL - which Pollard hopes will hold the team in good stead. Talking up the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran and Keemo Paul, the West Indies captain also backed CPL stars like Hayden Walsh Jr. and Brandon King to come good, stating that despite their average show against Afghanistan, their "scores and wickets haven't shown their ability yet". With the IPL auction also looming close, the youngsters from the Caribbean will be followed closely during this series.
When: Friday, December 6, 7:00 PM IST
Where: Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
While the wicket has traditionally helped the bowlers in Hyderabad, there were also some big totals posted during the 2019 edition of the IPL. Pleasant weather, with a high of 22 degree Celsius, will welcome the teams around match time. Also to watch out the third umpire tracking front-foot no-balls during this series.
With Dhawan ruled out of the series, KL Rahul is set to take the opener's position to partner Rohit Sharma. Sanju Samson, Dhawan's replacement, might have to wait for a while for game time going by Kohli's backing of Rishabh Pant. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar had a good workout in the lead up to the game and are likely to be the two front-line pace options in the eleven, with Shivam Dube's seam to back them. With regards to spin, it might come down to two/three of the four options in the form of Sundar, Jadeja, Kuldeep and Chahal, and whether they'll let go of an extra batting option in order to accommodate three.
Probable XI: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli (c), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant (wk), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar/Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav/Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Chahar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Nicholas Pooran, who is part of the squad for the T20I series, will miss out from the first game as he's still serving his three-match suspension for tampering with the ball. With Shai Hope also not part of the team, Ramdin is likely to take the gloves for the first game.
Probable XI: Lendl Simmons, Evin Lewis, Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard (c), Denesh Ramdin (wk), Jason Holder, Keemo Paul, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh Jr., Sheldon Cottrell
What they said:
"T20 cricket is all about being flexible - in where people bowl, where people bat - there won't be a set pattern. The combination or the eleven might be similar but there won't be a set pattern as to 'this is how we're going to go'. We have to be unpredictable" - Virat Kohli, India captain.
"We need to give people time in everything we do. In order for guys to invest in what they do, they need experience and we as the management team want to back these guys and see how far we can go because we have seen their talent and attitude and that's some of the things we look at" - Kieron Pollard on Brandon King and Hayden Walsh Jr.
