SOM VS ESS MATCH & ANALYSIS
With England taking on New Zealand and World Test Championship final around the corner, all eyes are currently on the longest format of the game. However, the shortest format of the game will begin to draw some attention with Vitality T20 Blast set to begin on 9th June 2021.
The third match of the tournament is set to be played between Somerset and Essex, two South Group sides that have done reasonably well over the years. Match Tips Essex are coming off a remarkable run in the County Championship and will be keen to replicate their form in this format as well. Somerset, on the other hand, have a formidable unit as well. The match between the two sides will be played at County Ground Taunton on Wednesday, 9th June.
SOM VS ESS TEAM PREVIEWS
Somerset are coming off a disappointed last season and will be looking to turn it around this time. While they finished fourth in the central group points table last year, their performance was far worse than that suggests. They were the second team from the bottom as far as runs per innings is concerned. Besides, their bowlers gave away runs at a pretty high economy rate.
Most of their wins came on the back of some superb performances from Babar Azam and Tom Banton and the absence of Azam will be a huge void to fill for them. Having said that, they have roped in Devon Conway, who can be equally destructing at the top of the order, but he will not be available until the WTC final is concluded. Banton, however, will be available from the first match.
Somerset gain their strength from a well-packed all-rounder department that lends excellent balance to the side. Lewis Gregory has gained plenty of experience since last year and will certainly hold the key to Somerset's fortunes in the absence of two stalwarts. Apart from him, a lot will depend on how Tom Abell is able to deliver. He was top-scorer for Somerset last year and will be looking to better that this time around.
Somerset have a terrific top-order that can keep even the best of the bowlers at bay. However, the same is arguably their biggest weakness as well. They might find it a little difficult to rebuild if they lose a couple of early wickets. All in all, Somerset have a decent side that should do better than last year. The absence of Conway could hurt them big time in the opening match and if they are able to get a decent start with the bat, they should be in business.
Essex Eagles were the title winners in 2019, but their campaign was far from how it should have been for a team defending the title. They struggled to even qualify for the finals day and eventually finished fifth in the South Group. They have been brilliant in the County Championship thus far and will want to replicate their form in the shortest version of the game as well.
Essex have a terrific middle-order, at least on paper and would need the likes of Tom Westley and Dan Lawrence to fire. However, Lawrence is currently away on national duty and will not be available for at least a week. Cricket Tips Just like Somerset, they too have a fantastic battery of all-rounders available. Jimmy Neesham and Ryan ten Doeschate have plenty of experience up their sleeve and can prove to be a handful this year.
With Varun Chopra and Feroze Khushi, Essex's top-order seems to be a little under-powered. Besides, the absence of Dan Lawrence could hurt them big time in the first few matches of the tournament. The likes of Ryan ten Doeschate, Adam Wheater, and Tom Westley manage to step up along with the bowlers, Essex Eagles could be a hard team to deal with.
